European football tips

France to beat Hungary @ 3/10

Les Bleus justified their position as Euro 2020 favourites with a crucial 1-0 success versus Germany in Munich in the ultra-competitive Group F. Only a Mats Hummels own goal separated the teams on the scoresheet but France were far more impressive in our opinion, with Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema only just denied further strikes by tight offside calls. Hungary look in too deep after losing to Portugal, even though they made the holders work hard for victory before a late flurry of goals.

Portugal to beat Germany @ 11/5

The defending champions took a long time to wear down Hungary in Budapest, only going ahead in the 84th minute via a deflected shot by Raphael Guerreiro. However, Cristiano Ronaldo then clinically converted a penalty and added a sublime third in the closing stages to put Portugal in fine spirits at the final whistle. Germany played their part in an intriguing clash with France but the World Cup flops struggled to create clear-cut chances and often seemed short of pace compared to Les Bleus.

Spain to beat Poland @ 4/11

La Roja let favourite backers down when held to a goalless draw by Sweden but did enough in general play to make them worth sticking with. Spain had 85 per cent possession, 17 attempts on goal and some outstanding chances to break the deadlock, with Alvaro Morata the main culprit for missing opportunities. Gerard Moreno looked lively when coming off the bench, though, and could be the answer up front. Poland have developed a nasty habit of disappointing at major tournaments and went down 2-1 to Slovakia.

Italy to beat Wales @ 5/11

The Azzurri look like serious contenders for Euro 2020 after starting their campaign with impressive victories. Roberto Mancini’s team brushed aside Turkey and Switzerland 3-0 to become the first team to reach the last 16 and have made people sit up and take notice with the manner of their performances. Wales have lost only three of their last 21 games but those defeats have come against elite international sides in England, Belgium and France and Italy could now be back in the same category.

Switzerland to beat Turkey @ 7/10

Both of these teams are trailing in Group A and need to go for a win in Baku to have any chance of advancing but the Rossocrociati appear to be in better form and have to be rated a percentage pick to prevail. The tempo of this match should be much more suitable, allowing the likes of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka and Liverpool playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri to control proceedings. The omens are good for Switzerland as they have progressed past the group stage at the last three major finals – two World Cups and Euro 2016.
