Liverpool are expected to win at Southampton but there were some worrying signs again in their UEFA Super Cup penalty shoot-out triumph over Chelsea.
The Reds looked pretty ragged at the back at times both in that contest and their Premier League opener versus Norwich on home turf.
We’re leaning towards 19/10 for an away win and both teams to score for our first Southampton vs Liverpool prediction.
A Look At Southampton’s Betting Odds
Southampton had to survive a relegation scare last season and could be set for another battle to stay up this term, judged on last week’s 3-0 thumping at Burnley.
To be fair, conditions were tough at a wet and windy Turf Moor, where the Clarets scored all of their goals in a 12-minute second-half blitz.
Having to make a late reshuffle after captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg came down with sickness during the bus journey to the ground was another viable excuse for that disappointing display.
However, Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted Saints’ reaction to going behind on 63 minutes “was not acceptable” and added: “We must be more focused.”
This is a tough next test, though, so 21/2 for a repeat of last season’s 3-1 loss to the Reds at this venue catches the eye from the Southampton vs Liverpool odds.
Last Southampton line-up: Gunn, Vestergaard, Stephens, Bertrand, Bednarek, Valery, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Ings, Adams.
Saints should have new signing Kevin Danso available – the defender has joined up with the squad this week after his deadline-day switch from Augsburg.
Captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg should also be involved following illness and winger Moussa Djenepo could be set for a debut having been an unused substitute at Burnley.
A Look At Liverpool’s Betting Odds
Liverpool blew away Norwich in the first half before ending up with a 4-1 victory following a sloppy second period.
Wednesday’s Super Cup clash then went all the way to spot-kicks after the scores were level at the end of extra-time, with new keeper Adrian ultimately proving the Istanbul hero.
“He had an incredible game,” declared Jurgen Klopp. “Both goalkeepers made sensational saves, but with Adrian it’s a bit more surprising because it was without pretty much any preparation.
“He has already shown me he is a proper personality in the dressing room as well – he was maybe even louder than I was at half-time. He was really on his toes and that helps us.”
Olivier Giroud put Chelsea ahead in the first half, only for Sadio Mane to level as the match went to extra-time.
Mane would score again before Adrian brought Tammy Abraham down in the box, allowing Jorginho to make it 2-2.
Saints old boy Mane has yet to score against his former club but 7/2 for him to break the deadlock here is added to our Southampton vs Liverpool betting tips.
Last Liverpool line-up: Adrian, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Milner, Salah, Mane, Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Adrian is a slight doubt for Liverpool after an accidental collision with a supporter in the immediate aftermath of the Super Cup left the goalkeeper with a swollen ankle.
First choice Alisson Becker has a calf injury so if Adrian is unavailable at St Mary’s then Andy Lonergan is likely to be deployed. Midfielder Naby Keita will miss out because of a muscle strain.
