Liverpool vs Man City: Title rivals hard to split

Liverpool and Manchester City are both realistic Premier League title contenders and meet at Anfield on Sunday in a mouthwatering match-up.

The Reds have a one-point lead over the defending champions plus home advantage but City make the short trip to Merseyside as favourites.

Both teams could be forgiven for focusing on avoiding defeat at this stage of the campaign and a draw at 13/5 is our opening Liverpool vs Man City prediction.

A Look At Liverpool’s Betting Odds

Liverpool look to be getting back to the form which saw them clinch the title in 2019/20 and are the top scorers in the Premier League with 15 goals from six matches.

Their 5-1 Champions League win over Porto on Tuesday was the sixth successive match in which they scored three or more goals, only the third time in the club’s history the feat has been achieved.

Mohamed Salah has eight goals in as many games already, having only failed to score against Burnley, while Sadio Mane (four), Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino (both three) are all contributing.

Boss Jurgen Klopp knows it will not just be about the goals when Pep Guardiola’s side visit Anfield on Sunday though.

He said: “We play against Man City, I don’t think now it makes too much sense to think too much about how many goals we can score against them.

“We need a complex and complete performance against them to have a chance only and that’s it.

“But I’m really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to playing at home again after a while.”

Klopp may be cautious but backing both teams to score has paid out in five of their last six meetings with City in all competitions.

Over 3.5 goals have been scored in three of the last four so a repeat at 8/5 looks a fair price in the Liverpool vs Man City odds.

Last Liverpool line-up: Alisson, Van Dijk, Robertson, Matip, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Jones, Mane, Salah, Jota.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold (groin) and midfielder Thiago Alcantara (calf) will be absent.

Midfielder James Milner looks set to continue deputising for Alexander-Arnold, although Klopp could consider Joe Gomez for the position.

A Look At Manchester City’s Betting Odds

City had a much more difficult Champions League test this week and suffered a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital.

Goals from Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi proved decisive but the score was a harsh reflection of City’s performance.

They played a full part in a thrilling encounter but the closest they went to scoring was when Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva both hit the crossbar within the space of a few seconds in the first half.

Defender Ruben Dias does not believe the frustrating result will have any bearing on the trip to Merseyside, saying: “It affects nothing.

“We know what we are capable of and we know our identity. We know what we need to do at Anfield to win.

“It is a loss and we are frustrated but that is the good habit of being a top team. We will take it but in no time will be there again.”

City showed with last weekend’s 1-0 win at Chelsea why they are the favourites to retain their title and a haul of four points from arguably their two toughest domestic fixtures of the season would be a great return.

We don’t expect either team to push too hard for a winner late on if the scores are level and a score draw at 31/10 is the last of our Liverpool vs Man City betting tips.

Last Man City line-up: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo, Grealish, Rodri, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Mahrez.

City have no fresh injury concerns following their Champions League trip but midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko remain on the sidelines with thigh and calf injuries respectively.
